3-hour Interactive Workshop

Stories That Harm, Stories That Heal: Identifying and Addressing Fault Lines in our Communities

Stories are valuable to communities struggling to understand their circumstances; stories are also limited to the perspective of the storyteller. In this workshop, researchers from the Welcome Project will introduce their practice in digital storytelling and facilitated conversation through their current regional project collecting first-person stories around the experience of white and green flight in Gary, Indiana. Participants will consider how to bring individual stories into conversation with each other and into conversation with socio-political contexts to draw out a more holistic narrative. In addition, researchers will present a recent, polarizing event as a case study to help participants reflect on more effective ways to work in and across communities to impact social change.
